The European elections in Sweden took place on May 25, 2014. It was part of the 2014 European elections taking place across the European Union . In Sweden, 20 out of 751 members of the European Parliament were elected.

Election mode

The elections are based on proportional representation , with all of Sweden forming a single constituency. As with the elections to the Swedish Reichstag, there is a 4% threshold . The distribution of the seats on the lists is based on a modified Sainte-Laguë method with first division by 0.7.

The parties make lists. The election takes place by placing the voting slip of the party to be elected in the envelope. For parties that achieved at least 1% of the vote in one of the last elections, the ballot papers will be printed free of charge and displayed at the polling station. Parties who fail to do so must have the ballot papers printed at their own expense and deal with the distribution themselves. Freedom of choice is ensured by the display of blank ballot papers in the polling stations, on which voters can register a party. Since all entries are registered in the election results, this also offers the possibility of voting for non-existent parties, which regularly happens to a small extent in all elections in Sweden.

The voters can also influence the order of the electoral list to a limited extent. You can optionally tick a list candidate or, if you are using blank ballot papers, write down the name of the candidate. If a list candidate is thereby marked with at least 5% of the votes of his party, he will be considered in the allocation of mandates before the other candidates on the list, i. that is, he is placed at the top of the list. If this is achieved by several candidates, the allocation is made in descending order of personal votes.

Election date

The regular election date in Sweden is in June, although the Council of the European Union can also set other dates from May to July. In any case, the election will be held on a Sunday, in 2014 on May 24th.

At the same time, some local referendums are held:

The main winners of the election were the green Miljöpartiet and above all the Piratpartiet , which won 7.13% of the vote and a seat in parliament from scratch. In addition to the left-wing Vänsterpartiet , the loser was primarily the Eurosceptic Junilistan , which lost all three parliamentary seats.

The turnout was 45.5%, higher than in the 2004 European elections (37.9%), but significantly lower than in the last election to the Swedish Parliament in 2006 (82.0%).
