Prime Minister Per Albin Hansson succeeded in keeping Sweden out of the Second World War through a compliant policy of neutrality .

The election for the Second Chamber of the Swedish Reichstag took place on September 15, 1940 .

The Social Democrats and the three non-socialist parties had already formed a large coalition government in the Finnish winter war from November 1939. After the occupation of Denmark and Norway from April 1940, postponing the elections was considered. The election was then carried out on the scheduled date, but the parliamentary parties agreed on extensive restraint in the election campaign.
