Värmdö is a municipality ( Swedish kommun ) in the Swedish province of Stockholm County and the historic provinces of Uppland and Södermanland . The main town of the community is Gustavsberg .

geography

The municipality is located in a central part of the Stockholm archipelago . Large inhabited islands with road connections belong to the municipality: Värmdö (with the exception of the westernmost part), Ingarö , Fågelbrolandet , Vindö and Djurö . To the east of it are inhabited islands without road connections such as Svartsö , Möja , Runmarö , Sandön and Nämdö , as well as thousands of uninhabited islands or islands that are only inhabited in summer.

history

  • Several grave fields from the Iron Age have been discovered in the community, as well as a rune stone . Due to the postglacial land elevation , the sea level was about 4 meters higher in the year 1000 than it is now. Many former waterways are therefore now dry.
  • The community name was mentioned in a letter as early as 1314, when "Wermdo" was written. The name is probably related to the Vindöström strait between Värmdö and Vindö. This had relatively "warm" (Swedish varm ) water even in winter and was therefore navigable for a long time.
  • The stone church Värmdö kyrka was built in the Middle Ages and expanded several times.
  • At Djurhamn, on the south side of Djurö, there was an important naval base in the 16th and 17th centuries
  • The Gustavsberg porcelain factory was founded in 1825 .
  • From the middle of the 19th century, steamers sailed in the archipelago and citizens from Stockholm began to use the archipelago as a recreational area.
  • The current municipality was established in 1974 when the former municipalities of Värmdö, Djurö and Gustavsberg were merged.

economy

Initially, the inhabitants of the region caught and hunted seals and sea birds . In the 1820s a porcelain factory was established in Gustavsberg , which for a long time was one of the most important locations in the entire Stockholm region. Today mainly sanitary ceramics such as toilets and sinks are produced here.

In summer the population of the municipality doubles due to the many tourists and people from Stockholm who move into their summer houses during this time.
