Ekerö is a municipality ( Swedish kommun ) in the Swedish province of Stockholm County and the historic province of Uppland . The main town of the municipality is Ekerö .

geography

The municipality is located west of Stockholm in the middle of the Mälaren and consists of four large and several other smaller islands. Ekerön is also the name of the fourth largest island on Lake Mälaren and the second largest in the municipality on which the main town of Ekerö is located. It emerged during the post-glacial uplift from the three previously separate islands Ekerön, Kersön and Munsön and is characterized by forest-covered scree ridges . The other three larger islands are called Färingsö (Svartsjölandet), Lovön and Adelsön .

Attractions

The community is also known as the “island world of culture”, as there are many historical evidence on the islands, such as the former Viking settlement of Birka . The royal Drottningholm Palace is located on the island of Lovön .
