Madeleine Thérèse Amelie Josephine, Princess of Sweden, Duchess of Hälsingland and Gästrikland (born June 10, 1982 on Lovön in the municipality of Ekerö ) is the youngest daughter of King Carl XVI. Gustaf of Sweden and Queen Silvia . She is seventh in line to the Swedish throne .

Princess Madeleine was born on June 10, 1982 at Drottningholm Palace and baptized on August 31, 1982. Godparents were, among others, Princess Benedigte of Denmark , a cousin of her father's side, and Andreas Prince of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha , a cousin of her father's side.

Princess Madeleine started preschool at Församling Västerled in 1985 . In August 1989 she moved to the primary school Smedslättsskolan in Bromma , then to the Carlssons school in Stockholm 's Östermalm district . From 1998 to 2001 she attended Enskilda Gymnasium.

After finishing her education in 2001, she spent some time after London to where English study. From 2002 she took courses in law and architecture . In the fall of 2003 she completed an internship in which she dealt with architecture and furniture design. Since 2003 she was enrolled at Stockholm University , where she studied art history , history and ethnology . In January 2006 Madeleine successfully completed her studies.

Since 2006 she has been enrolled in a postgraduate course in Organizational Management and Leadership at Stockholm University in preparation for her employment in international humanitarian work. In 2006 she completed an internship at UNICEF in New York City .

Relationships, marriage and family

Princess Madeleine was in a relationship with the Swedish lawyer Jonas Claes Bergström from late 2002 to April 2010. In 2006 the princess lived with Bergström for six months in New York City . The couple got engaged on June 12, 2009 on the Italian island of Capri. The engagement was announced on August 11, 2009. On April 24, 2010, the Swedish royal court announced the termination of the engagement after it became known that Bergström had an affair with the Norwegian handball player Tora Uppstrøm Berg .

On October 25, 2012, her engagement to Christopher O'Neill , a British-American businessman, was announced. The wedding was celebrated on June 8, 2013 in the Castle Church of the Royal Palace in Stockholm and was broadcast by many television stations.

The couple has three children:

Princess Madeleine is the godmother of her nephews, Prince Oscar , the son of her sister Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel, as well as Prince Gabriel , the second son of her brother, Prince Carl Philip and his wife Princess Sofia .

Princess Madeleine is committed to protecting children, especially from sexual exploitation. She has supervised several projects in this area.

The princess sponsors the Min Stora Dag (My Big Day) foundation , which enables sick children to dream big.

Since moving to New York in May 2010, Madeleine has also been working for the World Childhood Foundation founded by her mother .

After living in London for some time, Princess Madeleine has been living with her family in Florida in the USA since summer 2018. and continues to work for the World Childhood Foundation from there.

The coat of arms is quartered by a narrow golden paw cross and has a heart shield .

The heart shield is split. Right in blue and red, divided diagonally to the right by a silver sloping bar with a golden wasa streak . At the top left in blue a golden eagle soaring to the right , above which the constellation “Big Dipper” with seven golden stars hovers. Below is a roof-shaped silver bridge with two tinned towers, which stands on a middle, large and two smaller passages, above a silver field cut with silver waves.

In the first and fourth fields in blue three (2: 1) set golden crowns (for the small imperial coat of arms of Sweden ). In the second field is in blue, on three silver obliquely left wave beams a golden rotgezungter and -bewehrter winning gold, Leo ( Folkunger Coat of Arms). The third field is divided vertically and shows the coats of arms of Hälsingland and Gästrikland.

On the shield rests a golden, five-pointed prince's crown with lace pearls and a blue cap with gold crowns. Between the tips there are black wasagarrows placed vertically.

Successful lawsuit against the gossip press

Due to numerous untruthful reports about her private life, Madeleine von Sweden, represented by attorney Matthias Prinz , successfully sued Sonnenverlag , which belongs to the Klambt media group, for compensation for pain and suffering for violating her personal rights. The Hamburg Higher Regional Court awarded her 400,000 euros in July 2009, the highest amount ever won before a German court in a press law case.
