Birth & Baptism
Prince Gabriel was born on August 31, 2017 in the hospital Danderyds Sjukhus in the municipality Danderyd north of Stockholm born. He weighed 3400 grams and was 49 cm tall. At a conselj convened on September 4, 2017 , King Carl Gustaf announced that he should bear the name Gabriel Carl Walther, Gabriel being the nickname. On the same occasion, he was appointed Duke of Dalarna (a title previously held by Carl Johan Bernadotte until his inappropriate marriage).
On the same day, the birth of a new member of the royal family was confirmed by witnesses. These witnesses were the 1st Deputy President of the Reichstag Tobias Billström , the Prime Minister Stefan Löfven , the former Reichsmarschall, Order Chancellor Ingemar Eliasson , Oberhofmeisterin Kirstine von Blixen-Finecke and the Senior Physician Sophia Brismar Wendel.
Prince Gabriel of Sweden was baptized by Archbishop Anders Weiryd on December 1, 2017 in the Chapel of Drottningholm Palace. His godparents are Prince Carl Philips sister Princess Madeleine of Sweden, Princess Sofia's sister Sara Hellqvist, Carolina Pihl, a friend of Princess Sofia, Oscar Kylberg, a friend of Prince Carl Philip and Thomas de Toledo Sommerlath, a cousin of Prince Carl Philip.
Position in the royal family
On October 7, 2019, King Carl XVI signed Gustaf decided that the children of Prince Carl Philip and Princess Madeleine will no longer be part of the royal family, but only part of the royal family. This means that they lose the title of royal highness. The title of Duke or Duchess is unaffected. This does not change the line of succession either. The decision stems from the fact that the royal house should be limited to people who perform public duties on behalf of the king. Since this will not be expected of the children of Carl Philip and Madeleine in the future either, they are now regarded as private individuals and can later accept a job or pursue an economic activity, which they would not have been able to do as members of the royal family. Prince Carl Philip said they support the decision and see it positively, as it gives his children more freedom of choice. Princess Madeleine also expressed support for the decision and emphasized that this had been planned for a long time and that it would give her children the opportunity to shape their lives as private individuals.
