The order of Charles XIII. is a Swedish knightly order , on May 27, 1811 by King Charles XIII. was donated by Sweden . Order day is January 28th ("Karlstag").

Foundation purpose and structure

Only a Freemason of the Swedish Rite in the XI. and are accepted to the highest degree with a Protestant creed. The purpose of the order is to encourage lodge members to charity and to reward civic virtue.

The number of members is limited to 33 living men, a maximum of three of them may belong to the clergy and a maximum of ten may be foreigners; Members of the “royal blood” are not counted. The minimum age is set at 36 years, royal princes of Sweden belong to the order when they are born.

The order consists of only one knight class, but the knights are called ledamöter ("members"). The king himself is the grand master of the order titled Herre och Mästare (“Lord and Master”), and he awards the knighthood.

As a royal medal of merit not part of the “system” of Swedish state medals, it escaped the abolition of the Swedish medals in 1975 and continues to be given to Swedish citizens.

Order decoration

Religious character in red-enameled gold succinct cross that of a golden royal crown surmounted. The white enamelled medallion in the middle of the cross is edged with gold. In the middle of the medallion are the intertwined donor initials C twice and XIII . The C stands for the spelling Carl . On the back in the white triangle there is a G as a Masonic symbol.

The medal is worn on a monochrome red ribbon as a neck medal . A cross made of red cloth or red enamel has belonged to the order since 1822 ; this accessory is worn on the chest. There is a special costume (see illustration).

In contrast to the Masonic decorations, the medal can also be worn outside the lodge as a royal order of merit.
