Henrik Reuterdahl (born September 10, 1795 in Malmö , † June 28, 1870 in Uppsala ) was a Swedish church historian , Lutheran Bishop of Lund and Archbishop of Uppsala .

Life

After studying at the University of Lund , Reuterdahl received his doctorate in philosophy in 1817 and was then appointed a lecturer at the theological seminar at the University of Lund. In 1824 he became associate adjunct of the theological faculty, in 1826 prefect of the seminary and pastor and in 1827 a member of the cathedral chapter . In 1830 he was promoted to Dr. theol. PhD. From 1833 to 1850 he worked as a librarian at the Lund University Library and from 1841 he also held a professorship for dogmatics . With Johan Henrik Thomander he published the Theologisk Quartalskrift from 1828 to 1832 and 1836 to 1840 , in the first edition of which he made a commitment to Friedrich Schleiermacher . Particularly in his Inledning till theologie ( Introduction to theology ; Lund 1837) one notices the model of Schleiermacher's brief description of theological studies . Erik Gustaf Geijer also had a great influence on him .

In 1845 Reuterdahl changed to the chair of church history (connected with the office of provost ) and devoted himself to his main work (which had already been started), Svenska kyrkans historia ( Church history of Sweden ; Vol. 1 under the title The Introduction and the Life of Ansgarius 1837 German published). By 1865, five volumes had been published that depict the story up to the 16th century. The work is considered to be the beginning of modern church history research in Sweden. He enriched the Apparatus ad historiam sueco-gothicam published by Magnus von Celse with new parts containing the statutes of the Swedish councils up to the Reformation. In 1849/50, Reuterdahl was rector of the university.

In April 1852 Reuterdahl, who had been a member of the parish of the Swedish State Council since 1844 , was at the instigation of Crown Prince Charles XV. appointed Minister for Spiritual and Educational Affairs by King Oskar I. Here he campaigned for a conservative church policy, in contrast to his former colleague Thomander. His last law forbade the administration of the Lord's Supper by non-ordained people , which was especially common in the lay movements of the Church .

Reuterdahl became Bishop of Lund in 1855 and Archbishop of Uppsala in 1856; until his death he served as the highest representative of the Swedish Church , which he shaped in a high church sense. In 1865 he inaugurated an Anglican Church in Stockholm with the Anglican Bishop John Whitehouse, which is seen as the prelude to the later and still very close relationship between the Church of Sweden and the Church of England .

Reuterdahl was admitted to the Kungliga Vitterhets Historie och Antikvitets Academies in 1838 and to the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in 1848 , and from 1852 until his death he was also a member of the Swedish Academy (chair 10). He was a Freemason and was made a Knight of the Royal Order of Charles XIII in 1860 . beaten.
