Anton Niklas Sundberg (born May 27, 1818 in Uddevalla , † February 2, 1900 in Uppsala ) was a Swedish Lutheran theologian and Archbishop of Uppsala .

Life

Sundberg studied Protestant theology at Uppsala University and was ordained in 1845 after passing the candidate exam . In 1849 he became an adjunct at the theological faculty at Lund University and in 1852 he was appointed professor of dogmatics and moral theology there. In 1857 he switched to the professorship for church history and, after receiving his doctorate, became a Dr. theol. 1860, 1861 part-time provost of the cathedral in the Lund diocese and rector of the university. From 1864 to 1870 he was bishop in Karlstad and as such represented the pastor's office in the last state assembly in 1866. In 1870 he took up his post as Archbishop of Uppsala as the successor to Henrik Reuterdahl and served as the highest representative of the Swedish Church until his death (longer than every other since the first evangelical archbishop). As an elected representative, he also belonged to the Reichstag (with interruptions) until 1892 and was President of the Second Chamber from 1867 to 1872 , and the First Chamber from 1877 to 1880.

meaning

Even when he was a professor in Lund, Sundberg was considered to be one of the most important representatives of high church Lutheranism in Sweden. In Swensk Kyrkotidning (1855-1864), edited with Ebbe Gustaf Bring (1814-1884) and Wilhelm Flensburg (1819-1897) , he advocated a close connection between state and church and thus against the Free Church . As archbishop he called for a Christian social policy to combat the materialism of the labor movement.

Honors

Sundberg received the Royal Seraphine Order in 1873 , later also the North Star Order (as commander ). In 1874 he was elected to the Swedish Academy and the Kungliga Vitterhets Historie och Antikvitets Academies , and in 1877 to the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences . In 1879 the Law Faculty of the University of Copenhagen awarded him an honorary doctorate .
