Wilhelm Flensburg , also Vilhelm (born August 3, 1819 in Södra Rörum (today part of the Hörby congregation , Schonen ), † October 31, 1897 in Lund ) was a Swedish Lutheran theologian and bishop .

Life

Flensburg, a son of the pastor Nils Johan Flensburg, studied from 1834 at the University of Lund , where he 1841 Master received his doctorate of philosophy. He then worked as an amanuensis at the university library . In 1847 he became a lecturer in systematic theology . After ordination in 1849, he took over a pastor's office in Stångby , but was repeatedly called in to substitute professorships in Lund. In 1858 he became a professor of dogmatics and moral theology, combined with a parish in Torna Hällestad . 1860 Dr. theol. doctorate, he served 1865-66 as rector of the University of Lund and took as a representative of the pastor Level on the last stands Reichstag partly 1865/66. Coming from the Hegelian philosophy, he developed into a leading representative of the Swedish high church . Together with his faculty colleagues Ebbe Gustaf Bring and Anton Niklas Sundberg , he published the Swensk Kyrkotidning (1855–1864), in which he advocated close ties between state and church.

In December 1865, Flensburg was appointed bishop of the Lund diocese and took office on January 28, 1866. Associated with this office was that of the University's Pro Chancellor. He held both offices until his death, although his final years were affected by many illnesses.

Flensburg was married to Constance Carolina Nyström (1829-1891) from 1854. His children include the linguist Nils Flensburg (1855–1926) and the royal personal physician Carl Flensburg (1856–1919).

In 1875 he was awarded the command of the North Star Order
