Gottfrid Billing
Axel Gottfrid Leonard Billing (born April 29, 1841 in Önnestad , Kristianstad parish , † January 14, 1925 in Lund ) was a Swedish theologian , university professor, Lutheran bishop and member of the Reichstag.
After studying at Lund University , Billing was promoted to Dr. phil. doctorate and received a lectureship in practical theology in 1867 . In 1872 he was ordained and worked for a few years as a pastor until he became administrator of a professorship in 1878 and professor of practical theology in Lund in 1881. In 1884 he became Bishop of Västerås and in 1898 Bishop of Lund . In 1900 he turned down a candidacy for the office of Archbishop of the Church of Sweden . Billing remained a representative of the conservative high church Lutheranism and fought against the free church revival movements.
King Oskar II , with whom Billing was personally very connected, appointed him his (part-time) court preacher in 1885 and appointed him commander with Grand Cross of the North Star Order in 1897 . His son, King Gustav V , also valued him and awarded him the Royal Order of Seraphine in 1921 .
Gottfrid Billing was also politically active. 1889–1906 and 1908–1912 he was a member of the first chamber of the Swedish parliament . Between 1909 and 1912 he was also its second president. As a politician, he took a clearly conservative position and, for example, opposed the introduction of universal suffrage.
From 1900 until his death, Gottfrid Billing was a member of the Svenska Academies , and from 1908 he was also a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences .
Gottfried Billing's son Einar was also an important theologian in Sweden.
