Strict Baptists
The Strict Baptists (German roughly: strict, strict Baptists ) are a loose association of Baptists with about 6000 members in Great Britain . Sometimes the term Gospel Standard Baptists is used. The individual communities are relatively independent, so that there can also be certain differences in teaching and practice. They belong to the Calvinist tendency of the Particular Baptists , who, in contrast to the General Baptists, do not assume God's universal will for salvation. The common celebration of the Lord's Supper takes place in a closed form ( strict or closed communion ), i.e. H. only the own, baptized members are admitted. This originally very widespread narrow practice was also maintained by Johann Gerhard Oncken (in Germany), while Charles Haddon Spurgeon combined a Calvinist doctrine of salvation with an open Lord's meal practice. Similarly, many Baptist congregations opened up in the 19th century, and in the 20th century other issues were in the foreground in church life, so that this narrow practice is only found in a small minority.
Most of the social life of these Baptists takes place among themselves. Two services are held every Sunday, in which the preaching of the word is central. Church attendance is above average.
Similar groups in the US are called Reformed Baptists or Sovereign Grace Baptists .
