Uckfield is a town and civil parish with 14,493 inhabitants (2011) in the District Wealden in East Sussex in southern England . The place is on the River Uck , a tributary of the River Ouse and on the southern edge of an area called Weald between the North Downs and the South Downs .
history
Uckfield is first mentioned in a document in the late 13th century. The place developed from a stopping point for pilgrims between Canterbury , Chichester and Lewes . The pilgrims crossed the river here and bought food at a defunct inn on Pudding Cake Lane, which still exists today . The oldest house in what is now Uckfield is Bridge Cottage from the 15th century and is now a museum.
Due to its location on the Uck River, parts of the city have been repeatedly hit by floods. The last floods were in 1989, 1994, 2000 and 2007. Since 2010 a flood wall has protected part of the lower-lying city center.
Piltdown , west of the city, was given in 1912 as the location of the Piltdown man , who later turned out to be a fake.
The missing and later declared dead Lord Lucan was last seen securely on November 8, 1974 at Susan Maxwell-Scott's house in Uckfield.
