Biddenden is a village and Civil Parish in Borough of Ashford County Kent , England . The place has around 2,600 inhabitants.
history
Biddenden is located in the Kent Plain, about eight kilometers north of Tenterden and was a center of the iron and clothing industry . During the reign of Edward the Third (1327–1377), Flemish dressmakers settled in the area around Biddenden. The landscape is also known for its wine and apple wine production ( cider ).
Name origin
The name Biddenden is derived from Old English and translated means something like Bidda's forest area.
Personalities
- Around 1100 AD, Mary and Eliza Chulkhurst , Siamese twins , were born in Biddenden, a representation of the siblings is the landmark of the place today.
- Utah pioneer John R. Winder was born in Biddenden on December 21, 1821 .
- On May 29, 1951, the German composer and music teacher Robert Kahn (born July 21, 1865 in Mannheim) died in exile in Biddenden.
Attractions
The Anglican All Saint's Church , the Anglican All Saints Church , is a Gothic church with an enclosed cemetery, on which the double grave of the Siamese twins Mary and Eliza Chulkhurst can be found. The pews of the church are lavishly furnished with seat cushions knitted by parishioners, whereby the cushions with rows of motifs (e.g. cross variations and seasons) are particularly noteworthy.
In the entrance area there are two artistically executed windows opposite, which show bird motifs ("All ye birds on the wing praise the LORD!" / "All birds under the sky praise GOD!").
