Tenterden, High Street

Origin of name

The city name is derived from the Old English word "Tenet Waraden" and means the camp of a man from the tribe of the inhabitants of the island of Thanet in a clearing.

history

The place grew from the 14th century as a result of the boom in the local wool processing factories, which was caused by the influx of Flemish clothing makers. Compared to other centers in the Weald area , Tenterden had the advantage of having its own sea access.

The lumber from the Weald area was used for shipbuilding. Tenterden was admitted to the Cinque-Ports-Bund in 1449 .

Much of what is now Romney Marsh had not yet been reclaimed and was still under water; today Tenterden is no longer a port city. The distance to the sea is about 20 kilometers.

City administration

The city is divided into four wards for administrative purposes : North, South, West and St. Michaels.

Churches and chapels

St. Mildred Church from the southeast

There are two parishes called "parish churches " in England:

  • The catchment area of St. Mildred Church includes the city center. The church dates from the 12th century and was expanded extensively in the centuries that followed. In 1461 the striking church tower was built, which at that time also served as a lighthouse.
  • The Church of St. Michael was consecrated in 1863; the steeple was added twelve years later.
  • The Unitarian Chapel dates back to 1695. A plaque on the chapel reminds that Benjamin Franklin attended a service here in 1783, which was given by Joseph Priestley .

partnership

Tenderden is twinned with the French community of Avallon .

Born in the city

  • David Frost (1939–2013), journalist, television presenter and political satirist
