Deal is a coastal town in the Dover District of the English county of Kent with around 20,800 inhabitants (2011). It is on the Dover Strait , eight miles northeast of Dover . The former naval port lies between Dover and Ramsgate . Closely connected to Deal are the places Kingsdown and Walmer , the latter the place where Julius Caesar is believed to have first entered Great Britain .

Deal was incorporated into the Cinque Ports in 1278 , formerly an influential economic and military alliance of port cities on the English Channel. Due to its location on the Goodwin Sands sandbanks , Deal temporarily became one of the largest military ports in England. Today it enjoys the reputation of a quiet seaside resort; the picturesque streets and houses are remnants of Deals's eventful history. The French coast is about 40 kilometers away and can be seen on a clear day.

Deal Castle , a coastal fortress built by Henry VIII around 1540 , is one of the town's landmarks .

In Deal, “ Dealgnait ” - a local god of death or fertility goddess - was worshiped in a basement sanctuary in the 1st or 2nd century AD .
