The A28 road ( English for ' A28 road ') is a primary route designated trunk road in the south-east of England .

It runs from the seaside resort of Margate in Kent to Hastings in East Sussex . The main locations along the route are Ramsgate , Canterbury and Ashford .

From Margate the A28 leads via Westgate-on-Sea , Birchington-on-Sea , Sarre , Upstreet , Hersden , Sturry to Canterbury, where it forms part of the bypass, and then via Wincheap to Thanington Without . There are plans to connect them north to the A2.

The A28 then crosses the North Downs and connects Chartham , Chilham , Godmersham and Bilting . After Kennington , a suburb of Ashford, it bypasses the center of that town. Here it is expanded to four lanes. Past Great Chart , the A28 winds around Weald and reaches Bethersden , High Halden , and Tenterden .

The trunk road continues via Rolvenden to Newenden . A narrow bridge leads over the river Rother . In Northiam the county of East Sussex is reached; now the road becomes very winding. After the village of Brede , it leads steeply down to a bridge over the river of the same name. The next place is Westfield , shortly after the following climb it ends at the junction with the A21 north of Hastings .
