Johan August Ekman
Johan August Ekman (born November 26, 1845 in Hjälstad , Västergötland , † November 30, 1913 in Uppsala ) was a Swedish Lutheran clergyman and archbishop of Uppsala .
Life
After studying Protestant theology at Uppsala University , Ekman held various ecclesiastical and scientific offices before becoming professor of theological propaedeutics and encyclopedia in Uppsala in 1887. As the first theology professor to offer seminars, he became one of the initiators of the young church movement (" Ungkyrkorörelsen "), which wanted to fill the Swedish state church with new life.
In 1896 he was appointed provost in Uppsala and in 1898 as bishop of the Västerås diocese . Destined to succeed the late Anton Niklas Sundberg in 1900 , he took up his post as Archbishop of Uppsala in January 1901 and served as the highest representative of the Church of Sweden until his death . In 1903 he was awarded the Grand Cross of the North Star Order awarded
In 1902 he called the first bishops' conference and in 1907 the first general church assembly (“allmänna kyrkliga möt”), which became important institutions in the church, established close contacts with the Church of England and campaigned for mission .
