Vehicles with eight car units (S8) are used on the Metropolitan Line and those with seven cars (S7) are used on the other lines. The S is derived from the area of application ( Unterpflasterlinien , English s ubsurface ).

facts and figures

The S Stock is part of the Bombardier Movia family. From 2010 to 2013, 133 S7 units and 58 S8 units were delivered.

The vehicles are air-conditioned and have regenerative brakes that recover 20% of the braking energy and feed it into the grid.

The trains can accelerate faster than the previous series at 1.3 m / s². The top speed is limited to 62 mph (100 km / h), which is 8 mph slower than the top speed of the A stick , but faster than the C stick or the D stick . If old and new trains are operated together, consideration must be given to the slowest row when drawing up the timetable so that there are no gaps in the operational sequence.

The S8 trains have 306 seats less than the older A floor (448 seats), but the S floor has 25% more standing room and more space for prams and wheelchairs.

New for London Underground are the car crossings with a large cross-section, through which an overview and passage through the entire train is possible. The trains are monitored by video, the driver can see what is happening behind him.

The trains have a modern passenger information system (FIS short, Eng. Passenger information system ) that the ordinary automatic announcements and spot light display panels includes the following locations:

  • three-line displays on the outside of the train: line, destination and (with the Metropolitan Line ) operating mode (fast, semi-fast, stopping at all stations)
  • single-line displays on the outside of each car, visible from the platform: line, destination and operating mode
  • Single-line displays on the train: adapted in each case: line, destination, operating mode, current station, next station, safety information

As usual in the Metropolitan Line, located in the S8 trains in addition to the lateral longitudinal seats (Engl. Longitudinal seating ) that can be folded in some places, to get more space for wheelchairs, strollers and standing, some cross seats in compartment form ( engl. reverse seating ) because the longitudinal seats are uncomfortable with the length of the Metropolitan Line to the suburbs to the northwest in the long run. The S7 variant does not have any transverse seats.
