The China FAW Group , a renaming of First Automotive Works ( FAW ) ( Chinese  中国 第一 汽车 集团 , Pinyin Zhōng Guó Dìyī Qìchē Jítuán  - "Chinese number one automobile factory"), is a state-owned vehicle and engine manufacturer in the People's Republic of China .

The company, headquartered in Changchun, manufactures diesel engines , passenger cars as well as medium to heavy buses and trucks . FAW produces in several different locations mainly in the northeast of China.

Corporate development

The company was founded in 1953 with Soviet support as the first automobile factory in China and began production of a copy of the ZIS-150 (Jiefang CA-10) in 1956 . In 1958 a copy of the ZIL-157 (Jiefang CA-30), the middle-class car Dongfeng CA71 and the prestige limousine Hongqi CA72 came into the range. While the production of the middle class model was given up again in 1958 after only 30 copies, the Hongqi series with the models CA72 and its successor CA770 became a great success. The model remained in the range until the 1980s.

The Dong Feng plant was spun off in the late 1970s and has been trading under the name Second Automotive Works ever since.

Since opening in the 1980s, FAW has entered into joint ventures with several foreign automobile manufacturers.

In 2006, the group produced around 110,000 vehicles, generating sales of over 1.6 billion yuan (over 170 million euros).

The German engine construction company Deutz AG in Cologne has been involved through a joint venture since 1996 and has taken over 50% of the company shares in diesel engine construction and management in this area from FAW since December 7, 2006. FAW, however, states that there is a connection between FAW Jiefang Truck and Deutz. From 2001 to 2004 FAW also bought Etsong (Qingdao) Vehicle Manufacturing , which was founded in 2000 . This was ultimately sold on to SAIC Motor .

For the full year of 2019, the China FAW Group was the second largest truck manufacturer in the world in the field of medium and heavy trucks. In that year, the company sold 284,889 trucks over six tons.

criticism

The Chinese carmaker uses patents and design documents from VW, in violation of the contract, to build engines and transmissions for its own division. These vehicles are also sold in countries where VW is a competitor.
