Sichuan Toyota Motor was founded in 1998 as a joint venture . Two sources specify November 1998. Toyota was involved on the one hand and either Sichuan Luxing Checheng Manufacturing or Sichuan Special Auto Works on the other . Both partners held 50% of the shares. Two other sources claim that Sichuan had 50%, Toyota 45%, and Toyota Tsusho Corporation the remaining 5%. From December 2000 buses such as the Toyota Coaster and from October 2003 passenger cars such as the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado were assembled. Another source mentions cars from September 2003 onwards. The brand name was Toyota .

In 2002, China FAW Group acquired 80% of the original Sichuan company and changed its name to Chengdu FAW Auto Liability . A source specified October 2002. The joint venture was renamed Sichuan FAW Toyota Motor either at that time, in 2005 or in April 2005. The seat is in Chengdu .

Notwithstanding, Toyota states that the new company was founded in July 2005 through a merger with Changchun FAW Fengyue Auto .

Since May 2006 the brand name FAW with the addition Sichuan Toyota or with the addition Toyota.

At the end of 2011, 4562 people were employed.
