Vilhelm Faxe , also Wilhelm , (born May 18, 1767 in Kvistofta (today part of the Helsingborg parish ), † September 22, 1854 in Lund ) was a Swedish theologian , university professor and Lutheran bishop .

Life

Faxe, a son of Pastor Jacob (Wilhelmsson) Faxe, began his studies at Lund University in 1782 . In 1787 he passed the philosophical master's examination and in 1788 became a lecturer in Latin. After the theological master's examination in 1791, he switched to a theological lectureship. In 1800 he was promoted to adjunct in Greek and Oriental languages. In 1804 he also took over a parish in the parishes of Södervidinge and Annelöv . After he had been appointed associate professor in 1808, he took over the full professorship for pastoral theology in 1809 and was promoted to Dr. theol. PhD. In 1811 he was appointed bishop of the Lund diocese and was thus also the university's procancellor. He retained both offices until his death. Impaired by illnesses for the past decade, he had some episcopal tasks done by his Provost Henrik Reuterdahl , who later became his successor. He took part in all the Reichstag between 1810 and 1834 as a member of the pastorate.

Faxe was married to Agneta Sophia Lindman (1770-1805) since 1795. After her death in 1806 he married Helena Johanna Billberg (1773-1845).

Faxe was accepted into the North Star Order in 1811 and was awarded the Grand Cross as commander in 1844.

Faxe visited all the parishes in his diocese several times and did a lot to promote the education of pastors. He supported the mission and abstinence movement . In addition to his official duties, he was mainly interested in the medieval history of his region. He published some studies and in 1844 founded the Sällskapet för utarbetande av Skånes historia och beskrivning . In 1829 he was accepted as an honorary member of the Kungliga Vitterhets Historie och Antikvitets Academies .
