Nils Hesslén

Nils Hesslén (born September 2, 1728 in Visseltofta [today Osby parish ], † April 13, 1811 ) was a Swedish theologian , university professor and Lutheran bishop .

Hesslén studied from 1745 at the University of Lund , where he obtained his master's degree in 1751 . He then served as tutor to Bishop Johan Engeström for 15 years . During this time he also worked as a lecturer, since 1760 as an adjunct , at the university and as a teacher at the trivial school . After ordination in 1764, he was the following year Präbendepfarrer of Husie and Västra Skrävlinge (now part of the municipality of Malmö ), 1770 additionally as provost . 1769 Dr. theol. after receiving his doctorate, he returned to Lund University as fourth professor of theology in 1775. Here he rose further in the hierarchy until he became first professor and provost of the cathedral in 1794 . In 1784 and 1796 he was the rector of the university. He participated in the establishment of the Royal Physiographical Society in Lund , as its president he served in 1783/84.

As early as 1777 and 1794 he had been unsuccessfully on the nomination lists for the office of Bishop of Lund . After the death of Bishop Petrus Munck in July 1803, he received the majority of the votes in the election and was appointed to the office of bishop - due to the absence of King Gustav IV Adolf due to the war, in March 1805. He was introduced by Archbishop Jacob Axelsson Lindblom in the summer of 1805 and served as bishop of the Lund diocese until his death , without placing any particular emphasis there. His special commitment continued to apply to the university, of which he was procurator qua office.

Hesslén was married to Johan Engeströms daughter Maria Beata (1744-1822) since August 2, 1779. The marriage remained childless. Since 1807 he was a knight, since 1809 commander of the North Star Order .
