Johan Gustaf Sandberg (born May 13, 1782 in Stockholm ; † June 26, 1854 there ) was a Swedish painter and draftsman .

Life

Johan Gustaf Sandberg, the son of the royal valet Anders Sandberg and his wife Catharina Maria Högberg, entered the preschool ( Principskola ) of the Stockholm Art Academy in 1794 . In this school he obtained his university entrance qualification in 1800 and studied at the aforementioned academy from 1801 to 1808. One of his teachers was the decorative painter Johan Gottlob Brusell (1756–1829). In 1803, Sandberg showed two of his oil paintings and a drawing at the Academy's annual exhibition. In almost each of the following years, during his creative period, he sent one of his works to this exhibition - initially thematically mostly from mythology and biblical history. Then he also chose historical motifs. With his work Karl XII. dictating a letter to his secretary , he received a gold medal at the annual academy exhibition in 1809. In 1814 he founded the Society for Art History with Bengt Erland Fogelberg and Carl Frederik von Breda (1759-1818) ( Sällskapet för konststudium ). These years around 1814 mark the artist Sandberg's transition to subjects from everyday Scandinavian life at that time. In addition, the last three artists mentioned ran a private painting school in the second half of the 1810s, in which the students were instructed in life drawing , which at the time was still frowned upon by the Stockholm Academy .

In 1821 Sandberg became a member of the academy and in 1828 a full professor. His students included Johan Holmbergsson (1804–1835), Carl Wahlbom and Nils Blommér . From 1845 to 1853 Sandberg was director of the academy. Like his Stockholm colleagues Fredric Westin and Carl Johan Fahlcrantz , Sandberg has hardly stayed abroad , apart from short stays in Copenhagen .

Alongside Per Krafft the Younger , Fredric Westin and Olof Johan Södermark , he was considered one of the most important Swedish portrait painters. Sandberg's portraits of the actor Lars Hjortsberg from 1823, that of the chemist Jöns Jakob Berzelius from 1827, and that of the writer and composer Erik Gustaf Geijer from 1828 were praised by the reviewers.

Johan Gustaf Sandberg married the pianist Sofia Dorothea Kökeritz in 1824 (born October 24, 1795 in Sala landsförs, Västmanland ; † May 31, 1878 in Stockholm). The couple had three daughters. Sandberg wrote to his friend Fogelberg: “I am happy with my little musical wife and I don't care about anyone but my art.” And Geijer has passed down that the Sandbergs' house was one of the musical hubs of Stockholm in the 1840s have seen numerous guests.

Johan Gustaf Sandberg found his final resting place on the Norra begravningsplatsen .
