Johann Wilhelm Carl Wahlbom (* 1810 in Kalmar ; † 1856 or 1858 in London ) was a Swedish painter, illustrator and sculptor.

Life

Wahlbom studied after attending the art academy in Stockholm from 1838 in Paris and from 1843 to 1848 in Rome . He taught at the Art Academy in Stockholm for several years. In 1853 he left Sweden for health reasons and moved back to Rome, where he stayed until 1856. While staying in a hotel in the Sabine Mountains , he suffered a stroke that paralyzed him. He sought healing in Rome, Lyon and London, where he eventually died. Wahlbom was buried in Woking .

Works

The Battle of Lützen: Gustav Adolf falls from Streiff

Wahlbom's works include several self-portraits, numerous paintings with animal and historical motifs, as well as watercolors from everyday life from his time in Paris. As a sculptor he created z. B. a faun playing with a child.

On behalf of an English publisher, Wahlbom was to produce illustrations for a book about the Swedish King Gustav Adolf. The plans came to nothing for financial reasons. One of his most famous paintings, which shows the death of King Gustav Adolf in the Battle of Lützen, was made in 1855. It hangs in the National Museum in Stockholm. Another painting showing Gustav Adolf hangs in the royal palace. Plans to use the battle painting as a template for a postage failed because the Swedish Post Office does not tolerate war motifs on its stamps; The painting was nevertheless reproduced by Czesław Słania for those interested .

Wahlbom illustrated PH Ling 's Asarne work in the years 1833 to 1836. From 1835 to 1837 he mainly worked on lithographic representations for the Museum for naturvetenskap, konst och historia by GH Mellin and NH Thomson.
