L'Islet is a municipality ( municipalité ) in the MRC L'Islet of the same name in the administrative region of Chaudière-Appalaches in the Canadian province of Québec .
geography
The municipality is located about 100 km east of the provincial capital Québec , halfway to Rivière-du-Loup . It lies along Route 132 on the south bank of the Estuary of the Saint Lawrence River . According to the 2001 census, it had 3886 inhabitants with 1727 housing units. The area is 120.02 km².
There are three rivers within the municipality: Rivière Tortue , Rivière Bras-Saint-Nicolas and Rivière Talbot .
history
The original settlement was founded in 1677 by the lords of L'Islet-Saint-Jean and de Bonsecours. The name of the municipality is derived from a small island near the village of L'Islet-sur-Mer.
The municipality was formed in its current form in 2000 and emerged from the merger with the former town of L'Islet and the towns of L'Islet-sur-Mer and Saint-Eugène.
The Notre-Dame-de-Bonsecours church was built in 1768.

L´Islet is the birthplace of the Bishop of Yoro , Jean-Louis Giasson (* 1939), and the organist Richard Gagné (* 1954).
