Rivière-du-Loup is a town in the Canadian county of the same name Rivière-du-Loup and is also its capital. The city on the right bank of the St. Lawrence River had a total of 19,192 inhabitants in 2010 and covers an area of 84.23 km².
history
Rivière-du-Loup was founded in 1673 by Charles-Aubert de la Chesnaye. The name is derived from the nearby river of the same name, Rivière du Loup , which bears the French name "Wolf River". In 1850 the growing community was renamed Fraserville in honor of the settler Alexandre Fraser and received city rights in 1910 . In 1919 the city got its original name back.
On November 10, 1950, a B-50A of the 64th Bombardement Squadron (43rd Bombardement Group, 15th Air Force) lost a Mk. IV atomic bomb in the Saint Lawrence River near Rivière-du-Loup. There was no detonation.

Rivière-du-Loup lies between Québec , the maritime provinces and the Gaspésie peninsula . The Trans-Canada Highway runs from Québec to Rivière-du-Loup, and then forks from Autoroute 20 to Autoroute 85 in a southerly direction to Edmundston . The further north running Autoroute 20 leads to Rimouski .
A ferry service connects the city with Saint-Siméon, on the other bank of the Saint Lawrence River. There is also a small airfield around ten kilometers southwest of the city center. Rivière-du-Loup is connected to the rail network of VIA Rail Canada .

- The Catholic Church of Saint-Patrice in the town center was built between 1855 and 1856.
