The Rivière du Loup (literally translated as "Wolf River") is a right tributary of the Saint Lawrence River in the Bas-Saint-Laurent administrative region of the Canadian province of Québec .
The Rivière du Loup has its origins in Lac Saint-Pierre in the Monts Notre-Dame . It flows through the regional county town of Rivière-du-Loup in a northerly direction. Finally, it flows into the estuary of the Saint Lawrence River at Rivière-du-Loup, opposite the island of Île aux Lièvres . The river has a length of 80 km. It drains an area of 1046 km². The mean discharge is 18 m³ / s. On the lower reaches there are two dams, each with an attached hydroelectric power plant (in Rivière-du-Loup and near Saint-Antonin ).
The river name of the Rivière du Loup is derived from the seals ( French loups-marins ) found in the estuary .
