Carl Johan Bernadotte
Carl Johan Arthur Bernadotte Count of Wisborg (born October 31, 1916 in Stockholm ; † May 5, 2012 in Ängelholm ) was the fifth and youngest child of the Swedish King Gustaf VI. Adolf and the Princess Margaret of Connaught . He was an uncle of King Carl XVI. Gustaf . The Danish Queen Ingrid was his sister; today's Queen Margrethe II is his niece.
Life
Like his brothers Gustaf Adolf , Sigvard and Bertil, Carl Johan Bernadotte was raised as a prince of the Swedish royal family. He did not graduate with a degree in political science , but became an officer in World War II . In 1945 he caused an uproar in his family when he decided to marry the middle-class journalist and sister of the writer Carl-Henning Wijkmark , Kerstin Wijkmark , who was also divorced. His grandfather Gustav V did not give permission for this marriage and also tried to prevent the young couple from obtaining a visa to travel to the United States .
The couple married in New York City in 1946 ; as a result, Bernadotte was deprived of all royal privileges. He lost his place in the line of succession and the title of Duke of Dalarna . After his grandfather's death in 1950 and his father Gustav VI's accession to the throne. Adolf's relationship with the family relaxed, especially since only one of the monarch's four sons ( Gustav Adolf, who was killed in a plane crash in 1947 ) had married equally. Carl Johan's brother Bertil had a long relationship with a commoner, whom he married in 1976 after his nephew, King Carl XVI. Gustav, who had given permission; his brother Sigvard, an internationally known designer, married bourgeois women three times in a row. In 1951 Carl Johan Bernadotte was awarded the title of Count of Wisborg by Grand Duchess Charlotte of Luxembourg .
Bernadotte worked internationally as an entrepreneur and business consultant. He was a partner in a number of American companies and owned an auto parts factory in Sweden. He was also successfully involved in the economic and industrial evaluation of Swedish inventions in the USA.
Carl Johan Bernadotte and his wife Kerstin adopted two children. The couple lived in New York, Paris and London before finally returning to Sweden in 1973. After the death of his first wife in 1987, he married his long-time friend Gunnilla Bussler , the sister of one of his childhood friends, the following year . He was last noticed publicly when he was seen at the wedding of his great-niece Victoria of Sweden .
He was the last living great-grandson of the British Queen Victoria .
