Prince Bernadotte in the nobility of Luxembourg

Gunnila Marta Louise Bernadotte af Wisborg (at times Bussler, née Wachtmeister von Johannishus, born May 12, 1923 in Stockholm ; † September 12, 2016 ) was a Swedish countess and a member of the Swedish royal family by marriage .

Life

Gunnila Marta Louise Bernadotte af Wisborg came from the Swedish aristocracy. She was born as the daughter of Count Nils Wachtmeister af Johannishus (1891-1960) and his wife Märta de Geer af Leufsta (1896-1976). On October 31, 1942, she married the director Carl-Herman Bussler (1918–1981), with whom she had three children. On September 29, 1988 she married the also widowed Count Carl Johan Bernadotte (1916–2012), the youngest son of King Gustav VI. Adolf and uncle of King Carl XVI. Gustaf . It was the second marriage for both of them.

On July 2, 1951, Carl Johan Bernadotte, his wife and their legitimate descendants were knighted by Grand Duchess Charlotte in Luxembourg . Carl Johan Bernadotte then called himself Carl Johan Arthur Prince Bernadotte and Compte de Wisborg. This was interpreted as meaning that his wife had since then had the right to call herself a princess , like great-aunt Ebba Bernadotte . The counts and countesses Bernadotte af Wisborg belonged to the unregistered nobility in Sweden.

As a member of the royal family, Gunnila Bernadotte regularly took part in family celebrations (throne jubilees, weddings, funerals) of the Swedish royal family. She was u. a. present at the wedding of Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden to Daniel Westling (2010) and, also after the death of Carl Johan Bernadotte, at the wedding of Madeleine of Sweden (2013).

Gunnila Bernadotte has received several awards. Among other things, she wore the Grand Cross of the Dannebrog Order and the Wasa Order .

She died on September 12, 2016. Her death was announced on September 13, 2016 in an official press release from the Swedish royal family. King Carl XVI. Gustaf praised Gunnila Bernadotte as "a dear, close and loyal friend of our family, whose death represents a great loss".

Death reports and obituaries appeared in all the major Swedish and Scandinavian newspapers and magazines. The tabloids referred to her as the "great old lady" of the Swedish royal family.
