Carl Axel Löwenhielm (born November 3, 1772 in Stockholm ; † June 9, 1861 ibid) was a Swedish count, military, diplomat and minister (1822-1839). He was the negotiator during the Congress of Vienna , in which Sweden while Finland and Swedish Pomerania had to cede it but Norway won in one.

origin

Löwenhielm came from the extramarital relationship of King Karl XIII. with Augusta von Fersen, who was married to court chancellor Fredrik Adolf Löwenhielm. He was thus the half-brother of Lieutenant General Gustaf Löwenhielm.

Life

Löwenhielm took part in the wars in Finland 1788–1790, in Pomerania in 1807, on the Norwegian border and on the Åland Islands in 1809. In 1808 he was promoted to lieutenant colonel in the Kronoberg regiment, in 1811 he took over command of the Västergötland regiment , became adjutant general in 1812 and finally major general in 1814. As lieutenant general (1815) he commanded the 8th Infantry Brigade from 1816 to 1824, and in 1816 he became chief chamberlain at the royal court.

At the same time began his diplomatic activity, first as attaché in Constantinople Opel , then as ambassador to St. Petersburg , from 1812 to 1818. In Russia he succeeded on April 5, 1812, to close the important contract that the basis for the 1812 policy firmly put through which Sweden secured Russia's help in acquiring Norway. Then he followed Emperor Alexander I during the war against Napoleon in Russia, Germany and France (1812-1814) and took part as a representative of Sweden in the Congresses of Châtillon (1814) and Vienna (1814-1815).

After King Charles XIV. Johann from the House of Bernadotte ascended to the throne in 1818, he became President of the War Cabinet in 1819. From 1822 to 1839 he was a cabinet minister until he had to resign because of his age and illness. From 1825 to 1826 he served as chairman of the board of directors of prisons and labor institutions in the kingdom and from 1838 until his death he was chairman of the commission for state statistics.

The burial took place in the Löwenhielmschen burial chapel in the Klara cemetery in Stockholm. King Charles XV and his brothers followed his coffin on June 12, 1861.
