Oscar Dickson

Oscar Dickson (born December 2, 1823 in Gothenburg , †  June 6, 1897 at Gut Almnäs near Hjo ) was a Swedish patron of polar research . He made an outstanding contribution to Nordenskiöld's north polar expeditions .

1841 joined Dickson in the office of Dickson & Comp. in Gothenburg, in 1846 he went to the Dickson Brothers & Comp. in London . From 1847 he was dispatcher for Dickson's properties in Norrland , became a partner in the company in 1850 and returned to Gothenburg in 1855.

Dickson was a member of learned societies and was appointed honoris causa Doctor of Philosophy by Uppsala University in 1877 . In 1880 he was raised to the nobility, as a Freemason in 1881 a member of the Royal Knightly Order of Charles XIII. and finally raised to baron in 1885 . The reason for these awards was the rich financial support that Dickson gave to Nordenskiöld's North Polar expeditions in 1868, 1870, 1872, 1875 and 1878 and later to various polar undertakings.

Oscar Dickson died on June 6th, 1897 on his country estate Almnäs near Hjo.

The Russian city of Dikson , the offshore island of the same name at the mouth of the Yenisei in the Kara Sea and Dickson Land on Spitsbergen were named after him.
