Prince Leopold, 1st Duke of Albany - fully HRH Prince Leopold George Duncan Albert, 1st Duke of Albany - (born April 7, 1853 in Buckingham Palace , London , † March 28, 1884 in Cannes ) was the eighth child of the British Queen Victoria and her husband Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha .

Life

The young Leopold

The birth of Prince Leopold was a sensation from a medical point of view, as his mother was anesthetized with chloroform during childbirth and her role model made anesthesia popular in obstetrics.

Leopold was baptized on June 28, 1853. It was named after Queen Victoria's favorite uncle, King Leopold I of Belgium , and was given the name " Duncan " in honor of Scotland. His godparents were King George V of Hanover , Princess Augusta of Prussia , Mary Adelaide Duchess of Teck and Ernst von Hohenlohe-Langenburg .

Already in his childhood became clear that he under the hemophilia ( hemophilia suffered). Leopold was the first known case of this disease in the British royal family, as his brothers were healthy. Some of his sisters were indeed female carriers ( female carriers ) of this genetic disease , but were themselves healthy.

Since he was unable to pursue a military career due to the illness, Leopold was primarily active as a patron of art and literature. In 1878 he became President of the Royal Society of Literature and in 1879 Vice President of the Royal Society of Arts .

Marriage and offspring

On April 27, 1882, Leopold married Princess Helene zu Waldeck and Pyrmont (1861–1922), with whom he had two children:

On March 28, 1884, Leopold died on the French Côte d'Azur in Cannes, after a knee injury from a fall from a horse, as a result of his hemophilia. He was buried in St. George's Chapel at Windsor Castle. Four months after his death, their son Carl Eduard was born, who was the 2nd Duke of Albany since his birth.

His widow Helene continued to live in Claremont House with her two children. She died on September 1, 1922 in Hinterriß, Austria, and was buried there.
