Princess Benedelte was born on April 29, 1944 at Amalienborg Palace in Copenhagen . She is the second daughter of the Danish King Frederik IX. (1899–1972) and his wife Princess Ingrid (1910–2000), the only daughter of King Gustav VI. Adolf of Sweden and the British Princess Margaret of Connaught . Her parents' marriage resulted in two more daughters: Margrethe Alexandrine Þórhildur Ingrid (* 1940), the current Queen of Denmark, and Anne-Marie Dagmar Ingrid (* 1946), the last Queen of Greece.

The princess was born during the German occupation of Denmark . One day after she was born, members of the Danish resistance group Holger Danske fired 21 gun salutes in the public park Ørstedsparken in Copenhagen, as a reference to the traditional gun salute of the Danish army and navy, which was at the time on the Eastern Front.

She was baptized on May 24, 1944 at Holmens Kirke in Copenhagen. Her godparents were King Christian X , Prince Gustav and King Gustav VI. Adolf, Count Sigvard Bernadotte , Sir Alexander Ramsay , Queen Alexandrine , Queen Elizabeth, later Queen Mum , Princess Caroline-Mathilde , Princess Margaretha and Princess Ingeborg .

After her grandfather's death on April 20, 1947, her father was named King Frederik IX. proclaimed. At first her uncle Knut of Denmark was the Danish heir to the throne, as the constitution provided for a male heir to the throne and Frederik IX. had no son. In 1953 the constitution was changed so that it now also made it possible for women to succeed to the throne. Benediktes older sister Margrethe became heir to the throne while she took second place. In May 1968 she fell back for the first time with the birth of her nephew Frederik .

Princess Benedelte and her sisters grew up in apartments in Amalienborg Palace and Fredensborg Palace on the island of Zealand . She spent the summer holidays with the royal family in her parents' summer residence, Gråsten Castle in Gråsten . In her childhood she was considered reserved and shy, but showed great interest in horse riding and, encouraged by her mother, became a member of the boy scouts.

She attended the N. Zahles Skole private school in Copenhagen, a boarding school in Great Britain and a girls' boarding school in Switzerland. In 1965 she took fashion and design courses at the Scandinavian Academy of Fashion Design.

In 1961 she was one of the bridesmaids at the wedding of her cousin Princess Birgitta of Sweden and in 1962 together with her sister Anne-Marie at the wedding of Princess Sophia of Greece and Infante Juan Carlos of Spain .
