Marie, Princess of Denmark , Countess of Monpezat, (born February 6, 1976 in Paris as Marie Agathe Odile Cavallier ) is the second wife of Prince Joachim of Denmark .

Life

Marie is the daughter of Alain Cavallier, who owned an advertising agency, and Françoise Grassiot née Moreau. Her parents married on June 14, 1975 and divorced in 1987. Marie has four half-brothers: Benjamin and Gregory Grandet from their mother's first marriage and Charles and Edouard Cavallier from their father's second marriage. Her mother married the entrepreneur Christian Grassiot on November 7, 1987, the third marriage. The mother and stepfather live in Geneva and Villars-sur-Ollon . The mother owns the hotel Château de la Vernède near Avignon in Provence . Marie's father lives near Paris. Marie's paternal grandmother is the French baroness Odile de Sairigné (* 1918 as Odile Labesse, first marriage Odile Cavallier).

Marie attended a primary school in Paris from 1981 to 1989. From 1989 to 1993 Marie attended the Collège Alpin International Beau Soleil boarding school in Villars-sur-Ollon ( Switzerland ) . She studied economics from 1994 to 1995 at the University of Geneva and from 1995 to 1997 at Babson College , Boston , Massachusetts . She then studied from 1997 to 1999 at Marymount Manhattan College in New York City , where she obtained a Bachelor of Arts .

As a student, she worked in marketing and public relations : in summer 1994 as an assistant at Estée Lauder in Paris, in summer 1997 as an assistant at ING Numismatic Group SA in Geneva.

After completing her studies, she worked for the advertising agency DoubleClick Inc. in New York from 1999 to 2002 , for an advertising agency in Paris in 2002 and 2003, in 2004 for the Reuters news agency in Geneva and from 2005 until her wedding as a board secretary at ING Numismatic Group SA , a company her stepfather runs. From 2006 to 2007 she also owned Club Foot Passion Sàrl .

In addition to her native French , she speaks Danish , English , Spanish and Italian .

Marriage and children

Marie Cavallier and Prince Joachim met during a hunt in Denmark in 2002 and have been in a relationship since mid-2005. In 2006 they separated for a few months. The couple got engaged in Turkey in the summer of 2007, and on October 3, 2007 the Danish court announced the engagement. The wedding took place on May 24, 2008 in Møgeltønder . The couple lived since then at Schackenborg Castle in South Jutland . In July 2014 it was announced that Princess Marie and Pinz Joachim are moving their main residence to Copenhagen. There they have a city apartment at Amalienborg Palace . Schackenborg Castle is transferred to a foundation.

Cavallier had French citizenship. However, she gave up this when she got married to become a Danish citizen. She belonged to the Roman Catholic Church, but joined the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Denmark when she married.

She has two children with Prince Joachim:

  • His Highness Prince Henrik Carl Joachim Alain of Denmark, Count of Monpezat (born May 4, 2009 in Copenhagen). The prince was baptized on July 26, 2009 in Møgeltønder. His godparents were Crown Princess Mary of Denmark , Benjamin Grandet, Charles Cavallier, Britt Davidsen Siesbye and Christian Scherfig.
  • Princess Athena Marguerite Françoise Marie, Comtess of Monpezat (born January 24, 2012 in Copenhagen). The princess was baptized on May 20, 2012 in Møgeltønder and on that day the first names were announced. Her godparents are her uncle Gregory Grandet, her uncle Edouard Cavallier, Carina Axelsson, the partner of Gustav von Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg, who is a cousin of Prince Joachim, Julie Mirabaud, Diego de Lavandeyra and Henriette Steenstrup.

Marie has a good relationship with the sons of Prince Joachim from his first marriage. She is the godmother of Princess Josephine of Denmark and of Magali Siesbye, daughter of Oscar and Britt Davidsen Siesbye, of Agathe Anna Steenstrup, daughter of Peter and Henriette Steenstrup, and of Nicholas Bendtner, son of Caroline Flemming and Nicklas Bendtner.

Official duties

The Princess has sponsored eight organizations, including the AIDS Foundation, the Copenhagen Jewelry Fair, the Danish Ski Association and the Danish National Commission for UNESCO. At the same time she supports the Syddansk Universitet .
