The Prinsesse Benedigte is a combined RoRo and rail ferry operated by Scandlines Danmark , which has been in service on the Vogelfluglinie since 1997 .

history

The ship was built at the Ørskov Christensen Staalskibsværft shipyard in Frederikshavn and christened on May 7, 1997. The delivery took place on October 17, 1997. Since November 1, 1997 the ship has been used on the Vogelfluglinie.

On February 13, 1999, the ship collided with the quay wall in Puttgarden. The ship was repaired at the shipyard in Frederikshavn.

On March 11, 2015, the ship was undocked from a floating dock at the Remontowa shipyard in Gdansk . Here heeled the floating dock by 13 degrees, whereby the ship slipped from the keel block. As a result, the ship leaked and the engine room was flooded. From April 15, 2015, the Mercandia VIII was used as a replacement ferry. After the repair work, the ship returned on July 9, 2015, but was taken out of service again a little later and was again in Rødbyhavn. Since July 16, 2015, the Prinsesse Benedektiven has been in regular use again.

On December 14, 2019, the ship transported the last Eurocity to the north on the Vogelfluglinie railway trajectory.

Sister ship

The Prinsesse Benedigte is the sister ship of the Prins Richard . The two ships are named after the prince couple Richard zu Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg and Benedigte von Denmark , who married on February 3, 1968.

The newbuildings of Scandlines Deutschland GmbH, which were also put into service in 1997, the Germany and Schleswig-Holstein have almost the same main parameters, but have differences in the design and the layout of the passenger area.

Environmentally friendly technologies

In the period 2013–2014, environmentally friendly technologies were installed on all four Vogelfluglinie ferries ( Prins Richard, Prinsesse Benedektiven, Germany and Schleswig-Holstein ). A new hybrid drive combines a combustion engine and an electric drive, with excess energy being stored in batteries. According to the shipping company, up to 15 percent of CO 2 emissions can be saved in this way . In addition, gas scrubbers were installed for exhaust gas cleaning .
