The Deutschland is a combined RoRo and rail ferry from Scandlines Deutschland GmbH , which has been in service on the Vogelfluglinie since 1997 .

history

The completely newly developed double-ended ferry , together with its sister ship , the Schleswig-Holstein , was commissioned by the German Baltic Sea Ferry Company (DFO) from Van der Giessen-De Noord in Krimpen aan den IJssel in April 1996 . The shipyard was able to prevail against a wide range of competition and delivered the ship on October 7, 1997. With the baptism on October 9, 1997 by Bärbel Kleedehn (Minister in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania), Germany was put into service. It continues the tradition of its namesake from 1963 to 1972 and 1972 to 1997 on the route between Puttgarden ferry station and Rødby Færge .

On October 9, 2010, Germany brought the passengers of the Lisco Gloria ferry, which caught fire, to Kiel , after they had been picked up by the Neustrelitz police boat ( Sassnitz class ).

technical description

ICE TD at Germany

In contrast to its predecessors, the Deutschland only has one track to accommodate an ICE TD or DSB MF . The transport of freight wagons has been stopped on the Vogelfluglinie. The ship is automatically moored in the widened ferry beds with hooks at the level of the railway deck. Because the double-ended ferry no longer has to perform the usual turning maneuvers, the travel time has been reduced by 25 percent and is now only 45 minutes.

In 2013 Scandlines had a hybrid drive installed for the first time at the Prinsesse Benedigte. In the course of 2014, the retrofitting of the three other ferries of the Vogelfluglinie followed. The hybrid drive combines a combustion engine and an electric drive, with excess energy being stored in batteries. According to the shipping company, this can save up to 15 percent of CO₂ emissions. In addition, gas scrubbers were installed for exhaust gas desulfurization .

Others

The newbuildings of Scandlines Danmark A / S, the Prins Richard and Prinsesse Benedicts , which were also put into service in 1997, have almost identical main parameters, but differ in the design and layout of the passenger area.
