Rødbyhavn is a Danish ferry port on the Fehmarnbelt and a town on the island of Lolland . Founded as the port of Rødby , it is part of the Lolland municipality in the Sjælland region .

It is located about five kilometers south of Rødby and around 20 kilometers south of the headquarters of the Lolland municipality in Maribo . Rødbyhavn is connected to the capital Copenhagen , 150 kilometers away, by rail and motorway. The ferry terminal's station is called Rødby Færge Station .

The most important sources of income are the ferries to Puttgarden on Fehmarn as well as the port and related activities. Manufacturing companies include a shipyard and a fish factory. Another large employer is the Lalandia holiday center on the Baltic Sea to the west of Rødbyhavn. In Rødbygård 1929 various administrative facilities are located.

history

The discovery of the Syltholm antler ax points to the Stone Age . Up until the start of construction on the port in 1908, there were only a few farms in the area by the dike. At Syltholm on the outside of the dike, which was built after the storm surge of 1872 , a fishing and transport port was put into operation in 1912. With the emergence of a new settlement, the place name of Syltholm was changed to Rødbyhavn ("Rødby Hafen"). In 1916 the first shipyard was built, which went bankrupt again in the mid-1920s, causing port activities to stagnate. In 1920 the port was expanded to include an inland port basin.

In 1941, preparatory work began on the construction of larger port facilities, which should create the conditions for a ferry connection between Rødbyhavn and Puttgarden. In the post-war years, work came to a halt and only resumed in 1958. The Vogelfluglinie was finally inaugurated on May 14, 1963 . The ferry operation created jobs and attracted many immigrants, which more than doubled the size of the place. The planned Fehmarn Belt Fixed Link for rail and motor vehicle traffic is intended to complement ferry traffic to Germany.

port

The port is owned by the shipping company Scandlines Danmark A / S , which is part of Scandlines GmbH and operates ferries in the Baltic Sea. In addition to the ferry port Rødby Færgehavn , Rødbyhavn includes the two western docks Vestre Havn and Nordre Havn . To the port, which is protected from the open sea by two piers , leads an 8.5 m deep and about one kilometer long fairway . The recreational boating is a limited number of places in Vestre and Nordre Havn as a mooring available.

Others

  • The ferry service between Rødbyhavn and Puttgarden is the setting in the novel Rødby – Puttgarden (2005, German 2010) by the Dutch writer Helle Helle .
  • The Bag-Hyldehøj (also called Rødby Hyldehøj) is a passage grave (Danish: Jættestue) with an adjoining chamber. There are only 30 such systems on Lolland. Bag-Hyldehøj is located east of Rødbyhavn.
