Helle Helle (actually Helle Olsen , born December 14, 1965 in Nakskov , Lolland ) is a Danish writer . She lives with her family in Lynge near Sorø .

life and work

Helle Helle grew up in Rødby on the island of Lolland. From 1985 to 1987 she studied literature at the University of Copenhagen , from 1989 she attended the writers' school (Danish Forfatterskolen ). From 1990 to 1995 she worked for the Danish radio .

Two years after graduating from writing school, her debut book Eksempel på liv ( An Example for Life ), an experimental prose composition , appeared under the name Helle Helle . In 1987 she had already published a book under the name Helle Krogh Hansen. In the following years she received various scholarships and received several awards. In 1999 her first novel Hus og hjem ( House and Home ) came out, which was translated into German by Verena Reichel in the same year .

Six years later, after Forestillingen om et uncomplicated liv med en mand ( The idea of ​​an uncomplicated life with a man ), her third novel, Rødby-Puttgarden , was published, which, unlike its predecessors, is not about couple relationships, but about "women without men". In it, Helle Helle tells the story of the half-sisters Tine and Jane, who together with Tine's daughter form a very special family. In their apparently monotonous life - they both work on the ferry that runs between Denmark and Germany - death is a constant companion, while the men just come and go. For Rødby-Puttgarden , Helle Helle received the Danish Critics' Prize, among other things . In 2008 the novel Ned til hundene (about: Down to the dogs ) was published.

Since 2011 Helle Helle has received a lifelong artist income from the Danish Art Fund. In the motivation for the proposal of the representative assembly of the art fund it was said: "With her masterful staging of the completely ordinary life she emerges today as one of the most important interpreters of the middle class and the Danish provinces."

Helle Helle's novels have so far been translated into ten languages, including a. into German, French, Dutch, Estonian and Czech.

In March 2011 she represented her country at the Paris Book Fair . With her book Hvis det er (2014) she was nominated for the Nordic Council's Literature Prize in 2015 .
