Quetta Shura

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Quetta Shura is a militant, Afghan Taliban organization based in Quetta , led by Mohammed Omar . It emerged from the remnants of the Taliban government of Afghanistan, which was overthrown in 2001.

In 2010 it expanded its sphere of influence at the expense of other Islamist organizations in Afghanistan.

The Afghan government under Hamid Karzai tried to enter into a dialogue with the group in 2010 and tried to have some of its relatives, including Mohammed Omar himself, removed from the UN terrorist list . The group negotiated with the Afghan government in autumn 2010 about peace and possible participation in the government.
