The Sassnitz class boats were developed in the GDR as the Balcom 10 class (project 151) . These were the first displacement boats - speedboats that were manufactured by the Peene shipyard in Wolgast according to their own design . The Volksmarine referred to them as small rocket ships . They were intended to replace the Osa-class boats and were also intended for export to the former USSR and other allies. The Polish Navy put three ships under the designation Hurricane- class into service.

history

Four of this type of speedboat were commissioned by the People's Navy . Three of them were in service, the fourth was still under construction when the GDR was dissolved. The boats formally became part of the German Navy , which only  continued to operate one - the Sassnitz type boat . The Sassnitz was initially subordinated to the Coast Guard Squadron of the Rostock Marine Command and in 1993 after a conversion together with another boat - the former Ostseebad Binz and now BG 23 Bad Düben or BP 23 Bad Düben  - as BG-22 Neustrelitz, taken over by the BGS and later by the Federal Police .

On the night of October 8th to 9th, 2010, the Neustrelitz and the Germany ferry rescued all 249 passengers and crew members of the Lithuanian ferry Lisco Gloria, which caught fire near Fehmarn .

Three more units of the type were built for the Polish Navy after German reunification and put into service by the latter under the name Orkan-Klasse . The three boats were delivered partially equipped and then retrofitted according to western standards. Your main weapon is now the Swedish anti-ship missile RBS15 .

technical description

Hull and drive

The boats have a steel hull with a length of 48.9 m, a width of 8.65 m and a draft of 2.15 m. They have a design displacement of 348 t, which increases to 369 t when equipped.

The boats are propelled by three Soviet-style diesel engines via three propellers. These are 56-cylinder M 520 in -line star engines, each with an output of 3970  kW . This enables the boats to reach a top speed of 37  knots .

Armament

The main weapon provide two rocket containers FG 1520 Soviet design for each of four anti-ship missiles of the type SS-N-25 switch blade . As a special feature, the brackets are designed so that empty containers can be easily discarded and replaced. The ships that are later handed over to Poland, on the other hand, will be equipped with RBS15 missiles.

In addition, in the bow of the boat is a multi-purpose gun AK-176 (caliber 76 mm) and placed on the superstructure in the rear of a sechsläufige 30 mm AK-630 - gun system for short-range target air combat.

Flare launchers were installed for self-protection .

Sensors

The boats had three radar systems: a navigation radar, a radar for monitoring the airspace and the lake surface and a radar for target acquisition.
