The Zander class is a series of six project 414 reed tugs that were developed and built for the Volksmarine . In 1990 the German Navy took over three units as class 660.
General
Project 414 was commissioned to replace the Elbe and Warnow class tugs. Of the originally planned 30 units, six tugs were ultimately built. From 1985 to 1988 the Rostock dredging, towing and salvage shipping company was also involved in the project, but was unable to finance its newbuildings.
The tugs were built by VEB Yachtwerft Berlin according to their own design . The half-finished new buildings were transferred to VEB Volkswerft Stralsund for the subsequent final equipment .
The ice-reinforced hull is made of steel and is divided into five compartments by four bulkheads . The tugs are driven by a marine diesel engine from VEB Schwermaschinenbau "Karl Liebknecht" , which acts on a variable pitch propeller in a Kort nozzle . With a drive power of 530 kW , a speed of 11 kn and a bollard pull of 12 tbp are achieved.
The Zander class is designed for use in coastal waters and sea endurance of eight days. As tugs, the ships are equipped with towing gear , a ship's crane , a fire monitor and a dinghy .
