First Flotilla (People's Navy)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 1st Flotilla of the People's Navy was initially a mixed association, later an amphibious warfare association of the People's Navy of the GDR . It was one of three flotillas in the People's Navy and was founded in 1956. Their base was near Peenemünde on Usedom . The flotilla was dissolved on October 2nd, 1990.

History of the association

History of the association up to the fall of the Berlin Wall, 1956 to 1989

During a state visit to the GDR in 1957, Ho Chi Minh went on an MLR boat of the first flotilla

As early as 1952, the GDR naval forces, then still known as the “People's Police See”, set up a base in Peenemünde. Initially, boats of the former navy and some mine clearance ships were grouped together in a "coastal defense division".

With order 4/56 of the Minister for National Defense of the GDR , Colonel General Willi Stoph , the formation of the GDR's naval forces began in early 1956 . The already existing units of the People's Police at Sea were placed under the command of the National People's Army and formed the basis of the new naval forces. ( See also History of the People's Navy )

On May 1, 1956, the "Fleet Base East" was set up in Peenemünde. It initially consisted of 6 coastal defense boats, 18 mine clearance and laying ships (first clearing boat division) and auxiliary ships. On November 15th of that year the "Fleet Base East" was dissolved and the "1. Flotilla". . In the following years, the association's main task was the intensive clearance of sea mines . On December 1, 1958, the sea hydrographic service was also relocated to the base in Peenemünde. This included buoy layers and survey vessels . In 1959 ships for anti-submarine defense ( project 201M ) were integrated into the 1st flotilla for the first time.

In 1962 the first dropships, Project 46 Labo class, were affiliated with the association. From May 20, 1962 to May 1, 1963, the new rocket boats of the Osa class were also assigned to the first flotilla until they were transferred to the 6th flotilla in Rügen. In 1965 the 1st Landing Brigade and the 1st Security Brigade were formed. Ships of the 1st Flotilla took part in numerous exercises with the armed forces of other Warsaw Pact states, including the military maneuvers Brotherhood of Arms 80 and Soyuz 81.

November 9, 1989 to October 2, 1990

In preparation for German reunification and the associated end of the GDR, the order to demunition combat vehicles, ships and aircraft was issued by the Ministry of Disarmament and Defense on August 31, 1990 . The outpost boats of the 1st Flotilla were still in service in the Fehmarnbelt until December 1989 . Sailors and mates demonstrated in January 1990 in front of the headquarters building in Peenemünde to draw attention to various abuses in the flotilla (including supply bottlenecks). On October 2, 1990, the day before German reunification, the NVA and its armed forces were disbanded.

After October 3, 1990

On October 3, 1990, the Federal Minister of Defense Gerhard Stoltenberg took over the command and command over the parts of the dissolved NVA that had been absorbed into the Bundeswehr . Remains of the first flotilla were in the German navy , now German Navy , and taken out of service after a short time. Around 80% of the workforce was laid off in 1990 and 1991. The official dissolution of the 1st flotilla took place on April 1, 1991. The remaining parts of the facilities of the flotilla were combined in the "Naval Base Command Peenemünde".
