Shark class is the name for a series of Project 12 submarines that were developed and built for the People's Navy . The ships, initially referred to as submarine hunters , were later classified as small anti-submarine ships (UAW ships) .

development

The ships were developed to replace the SO-1 class boats (Project 201M). Before the start of series production, two prototypes were first built by VEB Peenewerft Wolgast from 1961 :

Project 12.1V (Hai I)

The ship was 48.7 m long and had a displacement of 278 t. The drive consisted of two diesel engines of the type 6KVD-43Au, which acted on the outer shafts. The center shaft was driven by a Soviet D 40 diesel engine. For the anti-submarine were four RBU-1200 , four single launcher and two outlet stages for six depth charges installed. Several systems have been tried as artillery . The ship was put into service on November 26, 1963 and after completion of the tests used for the school boat department. The decommissioning took place on November 2, 1970.

Project 12.3 (Hai II)

The second pre-series ship was 51.7 m long and displaced 316 t. A gas turbine system was used for the first time to drive the outer shafts . The Pirna 014 jet engine developed for the aviation industry generated the energy for two utility gas turbines, each with 3677 kW acting on two controllable pitch propellers . This gas turbine configuration was known as the Pirna 051/1 and was only used at high speed levels in submarine hunting. For the cruise , the medium shaft was again driven by a type D 40 diesel engine. The anti-submarine armament consisted of four RBU-1200s and two drainage platforms for ten depth charges each. Two 2M-3s were installed as anti-aircraft guns . The ship was presented to the public on October 7, 1964 at a fleet parade. As a test ship, it remained in service until April 21, 1983.

Shark III class

The experience and knowledge gained with the pre-series ships led to the improved project 12.4 and series production at VEB Peenewerft Wolgast. The deck structure was modified several times after delivery, in particular the exhaust shaft for the gas turbine and the four-legged mast for the fire control radar .

The propulsion system was identical to Project 12.3, as was the anti-submarine armament. The artillery consisted of two fully automatic AK-230s with the PUS M-104 "Rys" ( NATO Code Drum Tilt ) as fire control radar. The sensors were a radar type Reja (NATO reporting Pot Head ), a sonar type KLA-58 and installations for the identification friend or foe installed.

The ships were named after the district towns of the three northern districts and were stationed with the 1st flotilla and the 4th flotilla . The ship IDs were changed several times during the service period. From 1981 the Hai III class was replaced by the new Parchim class .
