The trout class was a class of light torpedo speed boats (LTS) of the Volksmarine of the GDR , which was built and put into service before the Volksmarine was officially founded on March 1, 1956.

Development history

The trout class was the only small speedboat class in post-war history in Europe that was designed with an offensive character at the planning stage. The first concepts emerged in 1952, and in 1953 the shipbuilding yards Schiffswerk Roßlau and Peene-Werft in Wolgast produced three prototypes . The primary armament consisted of three torpedoes . The launch frames were located in the stern area of the boat in specially designed rails.

After the completion of the first prototype, which was given the designation 0 , extensive sea trials in the Greifswalder Bodden followed in 1955 , which were modest due to engine problems. It was not possible to complete two incomplete diesel engines of the type MB 511 from Mercedes-Benz purchased in the ČSSR with components manufactured in the GDR. The boat 0 was then taken out of service. The other two boats M 5 and M 6 received Soviet engines. Even their sea trials did not bring the hoped-for success in terms of seaworthiness and operational suitability, so that both boats were handed over to the Coastal Border Brigade (6th Border Brigade). There they served as guard boats with their new designations G-01 and G-02 . Their torpedoes were removed and replaced by a 25-mm gun and two 12.7-mm machine guns. The whereabouts of the two boats is unknown.
