The Hugo Eckener was an auxiliary ship of the People's Navy that was in service with the 1st Flotilla from 1971 to 1990 . It was reactivated briefly after the reunification of Germany and sold to the Netherlands in 1991 .

Development and construction

The ship was created from the prototype of a fishmeal cutter of the type "Havanna", which was built by VEB Roßlauer shipyard in a series of 15 cutters for Cuba . The conversion and equipping of the air traffic control ship was carried out by VEB Peene-Werft in Wolgast . The hull , the propulsion system, the cargo booms and the stern lift were retained. A longer deckhouse for the crew was built on the main deck , and above it the command bridge with rooms for the military equipment.

commitment

The Hugo Eckener was put into service on February 8, 1971 with board number U 33 and placed under the 1st Flotilla in Peenemünde . The ship was regularly used by Jagdfliegergeschwader 9 to ensure flight operations by the air forces of the National People's Army . Due to its good seaworthiness , the Hugo Eckener was reclassified as a salvage ship in 1981 and the board number was changed to A 15. While maintaining the previous order, the ship was now used for other tasks.

On October 1, 1990, the Hugo Eckener was initially taken out of service. For the monitoring of issued units of the former People's Navy in the naval bases of the German Navy and the return of the old crews it was mid-October 1990 reactivated again. In the summer of 1991 the VEBEG was sold to the Netherlands.
