P-6 class was the later NATO designation of Project 183 , with the Bolshevik ( Russian "Большевик" ). It was a class of Soviet- made torpedo boats that were developed and built in large numbers shortly after World War II .

development

In 1947 the planning of a modern torpedo speedboat for the Soviet Navy began . The development was based on experiences from the Second World War. In particular, experience with the British and US PT speedboats of the types Vosper , Elco and Higgins , which were delivered under the lending and leasing law, were incorporated into the design, the planning of which was completed in 1949.

The 25.5 m long and 6.18 m wide boats had a wooden hull that was planked diagonally with two layers of boards. Only the small bridge was enclosed with 7 mm thick metal plates to protect the crew. Four marine diesel engines of the type M-50F served as drive . Later, a CODAG drive was also used in test boats .

Armament

The main armament of the boats were two 533 mm torpedo tubes , which were permanently installed at a 3 ° angle to the center line. So the whole boat was aimed. A double-barreled 25-mm gun of the type 2M-3 on the forecastle and one on the stern were used for air defense . The bow gun was not positioned above the keel, but was shifted to port.

In addition, the boat could optionally eight water bombs six mines of the type KB-3 or eight sea mines of the type AMD-500 type BB-1, carry (18 instead of the torpedoes). Versions with four torpedo tubes or anti-ship guided missiles were also made.

Calls

The torpedo boat of the GDR - Volksmarine with the number 844 and the name Wilhelm Bänsch left Darßer Ort on August 31, 1968 in order to shadow the Federal Navy frigate Karlsruhe , which was wrongly suspected in the sea area . In thick fog, the boat got into the Kadetrinne in front of the Swedish railway ferry Drottningen , was rammed and sank. Seven people from the People's Navy died.

More or less modified boats of Project 183 were built in several countries, for example in Poland (Project 664), China and North Korea.

Current Status

There are no more high-speed boats of this type in use, but in 2004 in North Korea rocket high-speed boats of the project 183-R were still in use. A boat from the Polish project 664 is in the White Eagle Museum in Skarżysko-Kamienna .
