Natural landscape at Darßer Ort

Origin and nature

The Darßer Ort was created by sand and sediment deposits . These have been eroded by the predominant westerly current on the coast of the Fischland peninsula over the last 250-300 years and have been deposited again at Darßer Ort, so that a small spit could form here . This development is not over. Even today, new land is emerging at Darßer Ort or parts of the Baltic Sea are being separated, currently the Otto , Libbert and Fukarek lakes , and subsequent siltation .

Dune landscape

The Darßer Ort consists almost entirely of sandbanks in the north and is relatively flat here. Further to the south there are dune belts that reach a considerable height. There are several depressions between the dunes, which are now either moorland or marshland or are mostly filled with shallow brackish lakes. Even further south, about 6 kilometers from today's coast, is the edge of the Altdarßes moraine plate in the Darß Forest, which represents the original coastline. To the north of Darßer Ort there are extensive windwatt areas and the so-called “Amber Island” (a higher sandbank).

In 2006, the Neudarß was included in the list of 77 awarded National Geotopes .

The beautiful nature of the relatively "young" country and the almost untouched beaches are accessible on a circular route.

Nature and conservation

The area around Darßer Ort is located in a nature reserve and is also part of the Western Pomerania Lagoon Area National Park . Due to the rare plant species and the numerous breeding seabirds here, there is a strict route requirement ; Excursions off the beaten track require a special permit. There are several herds of deer here. In autumn, the deer rutting can be observed at Darßer Ort .

Other uses

In 1962 the National People's Army of the GDR built a maneuver port for the People's Navy at Darßer Ort. The entire Darßer Ort was declared a restricted area and was not allowed to be entered. Today the port of Darßer Ort is located within the Vorpommersche Boddenlandschaft National Park. Its subsequent use as a port of refuge is endangered due to silting up, which is why the port cannot be called at times.

From 1972 to 1990 there were also two small holiday bungalow settlements of the Ministry for National Defense of the GDR and the 4th flotilla of the NVA People's Navy in the restricted area below the lighthouse . Their remains were completely removed in 1993 by the national park administration.

Others

Darßer Ort was named the sunniest place in Germany in 2009 by the weather service "Meteomedia" on January 1st, 2010.
