The 4th Flotilla of the People's Navy of the GDR was a mixed association of the People's Navy . It was one of three flotillas in the People's Navy and was founded in 1956. It was stationed at the Warnemünde - Hohe Düne base and was disbanded on October 2, 1990.

History of the association

History of the association up to the fall of the Berlin Wall, 1956 to 1989

1982 - Conscripts of the 4th Flotilla are released into civilian life.

With order 4/56 of the Minister for National Defense of the GDR , Colonel General Willi Stoph , the formation of the GDR's naval forces began in early 1956 . The already existing units of the People's Police at Sea were placed under the command of the National People's Army and formed the basis of the new naval forces. ( See also History of the People's Navy )

From the staff and some units of the “Fleet Base West” of the People's Police, the 4th Flotilla of the People's Navy was set up on December 4, 1956 on a former airfield in Hohe Düne near Rostock. In 1957 and 1958 staff quarters and facilities were established and the first ships were stationed. In the early years, the association's main task was to repair and expand the buildings and streets on the base, which was badly damaged after the Second World War as a result of the Potsdam Agreement . In addition, were mines cleared in the waters around Warnemünde.

November 9, 1989 to October 2, 1990

In preparation for German reunification and the associated end of the GDR, the Ministry of Disarmament and Defense ordered the demmunition of combat vehicles, ships and aircraft on August 31, 1990. On October 2, 1990, the day before German reunification, the National People's Army (NVA) and its armed forces were disbanded. The soldiers and staff appeared for the last time as members of the 4th Flotilla of the People's Navy on October 2, when the flags of the People's Army and the People's Navy were lowered at a ceremony.

After October 3, 1990

On October 3, 1990, the Federal Minister of Defense Gerhard Stoltenberg took over the command and command over the parts of the dissolved NVA that had been absorbed into the Bundeswehr . Remnants of the 4th flotilla were transferred to the German Navy in the Rostock naval command and after a short time decommissioned.

structure

A flotilla of the People's Navy was composed of brigades , which in turn were divided into departments . The ships were assigned to these departments. The 4th Flotilla consisted of a coastal defense ship and a security brigade, and two departments were directly subordinate to it.

4. Coastal Defense Ship Brigade

Stand of a brigade chief

The 4th Coast Guard Ship Brigade consisted of the coast guard ships of the People's Navy. Initially there were four Riga-class frigates and later three Koni-class frigates . Initially referred to as the 4th Coast Guard Ship Division, the association was restructured into a brigade in 1980 .

The 4th Brigade assurance consisted of minesweepers - and submarine defense units were divided into four departments. A training ship also belonged to this brigade .

4. Capture Ship Department

Stand of a department head

The 4th security ship division consisted of tugs , various supply ships and a barge. It was run as the 4th auxiliary ship and rescue service department until 1986 , before it was renamed.

4. Survey Ship Department

The 4th survey ship department mainly served the sea hydrographic service of the GDR and consisted of survey vessels that carried out hydrographic measurements and reconnaissance vessels for radio reconnaissance. The latter included the reconnaissance aircraft from Project 65.2 Meteor and Komet (modified ships of the Condor class ). To the group of survey ships belonged z. B. the Karl Friedrich Gauss , Project 136, a modified Condor II class .

Accidents and incidents

On November 2, 1962, an MLR ship of the 4th Krake flotilla (board number 221) and the minesweeper "Minden" of the German Navy (board number M1085) collided at 9:32 p.m. north of Warnemünde as a result of misjudgments by the commanders . Both ships were damaged at the bow , there was no personal injury.

On July 8, 1980, a collision occurred south of Gedser . The survey ship Komet (Kondor-II-Klasse), 4th survey ship division, came from port side , running hard in front of the bow of the Danish naval cutter MHV-94. The ships wedged briefly, the railing on the Komet was bent, and a leak above the waterline of the MHV-94 was torn in the bow area. There was no personal injury, but there was heavy diplomatic activity and reports in the Danish press that the Komet had disregarded maritime traffic regulations . The GDR, however, informed the Danish authorities that MHV-94 was clearly to blame for the incident.

Units of the association

The 4th flotilla was home to the largest warships of the People's Navy , the coastal defense ships (KSS) after they had been separated from the 6th flotilla . Until their decommissioning, these were the KSS of the Riga and later those of the Koni class.
