Klaus Kahnt

Klaus Kahnt (born February 9, 1934 in Leipzig ; † December 30, 2015 ) was a German rear admiral in the Volksmarine and the last commander of the officers' college of the Volksmarine "Karl Liebknecht" in Stralsund .

Life

Kahnt, the son of a hairdresser, learned the trade of a car mechanic from 1949 to 1953 after finishing school. On January 10, 1953, he joined the armed organs of the GDR , the See People's Police . From 1953 to 1955 he studied at the Naval Officer College in Stralsund. In 1955 he became a member of the SED and served from 1955 to 1956 as an officer in a department for operational planning in the administration of the People's Police See. From 1956 to 1958 he worked in the command of the naval forces of the NVA in the field of operational and tactical preparation and for the following two years in the 4th flotilla . From 1959 to 1961 he studied at the officers' school of the Volksmarine "Karl Liebknecht" in Stralsund and after graduation found a job as chief of staff in the 4th Border Boat Department of the 6th Coastal Border Brigade . From 1963 to 1964 he took command of this ship department. After studying at the "Friedrich Engels" military academy from 1964 to 1968, he continued his work as head of the 4th Border Boat Department until 1969 and was then appointed as first deputy commander of the 6th Coastal Border Brigade until 1971. From 1971 to 1972, Kahnt commanded the 4th Security Brigade of the 4th Flotilla and subsequently served as Chief of Staff and Deputy Commander of the 4th Flotilla of the People's Navy until 1976. From 1976 to 1980 he took command of the 4th Flotilla and was appointed Rear Admiral on October 7, 1979, the 30th anniversary of the founding of the GDR. From 1980 to 1984 he was Deputy Chief of Staff for organizational issues in the command of the People's Navy . The qualified military scientist Kahnt was from 1984 until his retirement on September 30, 1990 commander of the officers' college of the People's Navy "Karl Liebknecht" in Stralsund.

Kahnt died at the age of 81.
